September Is National Preparedness Month — Here's How to Get Ready

Every September, National Preparedness Month encourages Americans to take stock of how ready they are for emergencies, whether that's a natural disaster, a house fire, a power outage, or an unexpected crisis at home or on the road. The campaign, led by FEMA's Ready.gov initiative since 2004, centers on four key actions: knowing your risk, making a family emergency plan, building an emergency supply kit, and getting involved in your community.

Most people mean to get prepared. Life just gets in the way. September is the nudge to actually do it.

Know Your Risk

Emergencies don't look the same everywhere. Tornadoes, wildfires, earthquakes, flooding, and winter storms all affect different parts of the country in different ways. The first step in preparedness is understanding what types of emergencies are most likely where you live so you can plan specifically for those scenarios rather than a generic worst case. Ready.gov has a helpful tool for exploring risks by disaster type and region.

Make a Family Emergency Plan

A plan made in advance is infinitely more effective than one made in the middle of a crisis. A solid family emergency plan covers four basics:

Where you'll go if you need to evacuate, including a backup location if your first choice isn't available.
How you'll communicate by designating a friend or relative who lives far away (usually at least 100 miles) but everyone can reach, since local lines are often jammed during disasters.
Where you'll meet if family members are separated, both near your home and farther away.
What you'll do for pets, elderly relatives, or family members with medical needs.

Make sure everyone in the household knows the plan, not just the adults. Practice it at least once a year.

Build an Emergency Supply Kit

FEMA recommends having enough food, water, and medicine to sustain your household for at least 72 hours without outside help. Here's what a basic kit should include:

Water — one gallon per person per day for at least three days
Non-perishable food — easy to prepare, no refrigeration required
Battery-powered or hand-crank radio
Flashlight and extra batteries
First aid kit
Medications and medical supplies
Copies of important documents
Cell phone chargers and a backup power bank
Cash in small bills
Extra clothing and blankets

Store your kit somewhere accessible, and check it once a year to replace expired items and update documents.

Learn CPR and First Aid

During a large-scale emergency, medical help may not arrive immediately. Knowing CPR and basic first aid can save a life in the time it takes for paramedics to get there. Research suggests that CPR can triple a cardiac arrest victim's chance of survival. The American Red Cross offers classes nationwide and online.

Don't Forget the Insurance Piece

A go-bag and a family plan are essential, but your financial recovery after a disaster depends heavily on your insurance. A few things worth reviewing this month:

Know what's covered. Most standard homeowners and renters policies cover fire, theft, and wind damage, but flooding and earthquakes typically require separate policies. If you live in an area prone to either, the time to buy that additional coverage is now. Many flood insurance policies don't take effect until 30 days after purchase, so don't wait for a storm to be on the way.
Build a home inventory. Walk through your home with your phone camera and document your belongings: serial numbers, estimated values, and receipts where possible. Store it somewhere off-site or in the cloud. After a disaster, most people can't remember everything they own, which means they don't collect their full benefits.
Put together an insurance document kit. Store copies of your policy numbers, your agent's contact information, government-issued IDs, and medical records in a waterproof, fireproof container you can grab quickly.
Renters, this applies to you too. Your landlord's insurance covers the building, not your belongings. Renters insurance is often less than $15 a month and covers your personal property, liability, and temporary housing if your unit becomes uninhabitable.

Ocean temperatures continue to rise across the central and eastern equatorial Pacific, while atmospheric changes are reinforcing the climate pattern.

California could face a wetter and stormier winter as a strengthening El Niño influences weather patterns across the U.S., according to federal forecasters and the Farmers’ Almanac.

The National Weather Service’s Climate Prediction Center reported that El Niño is strengthening. Ocean temperatures continue to rise across the central and eastern equatorial Pacific, while atmospheric changes are reinforcing the climate pattern.

Meanwhile, the Farmers’ Almanac 2026-27 winter outlook forecasts varying weather conditions across the country. The outlook includes a wetter, stormier southern tier, periods of snow and bitter cold across the North, and a combination of rain, sleet, ice, and heavy wet snow in the Northeast.

Wetter Winter Forecast for California

The Farmers’ Almanac forecasts heavier-than-normal precipitation for California as an active southern storm track brings more storms to the state.

Frequent systems could produce periods of heavy rain, along with occasional mixed precipitation and snow when colder air moves into California.

Southern California is expected to experience particularly frequent storm systems. However, generally mild temperatures could result in more precipitation falling as rain instead of snow in some mountain areas.

The Pacific Northwest, meanwhile, could experience a more variable and less dependable snow season.

El Niño Influences Southern Storm Track

The Farmers’ Almanac expects El Niño to remain an important influence through the heart of winter, supporting wetter-than-normal conditions across much of the southern U.S.

An active storm track could extend from Southern California and the Desert Southwest through Texas, the Gulf Coast, and the Southeast. These regions could experience frequent storm systems and occasional periods of colder air.

When colder air meets moisture, some storms could bring sleet, freezing rain, or heavy wet snow. The southern Rockies could also receive substantial mountain snowfall.

Winter Conditions Across the U.S.

The Northern Rockies and Northern Plains are expected to record near-normal temperatures overall, although fast-moving systems could bring sudden cold snaps, snow, and blustery conditions.

The South Central region is forecast to have a wetter-than-normal and stormy winter, particularly as systems move through Texas and the Gulf Coast. Colder air could occasionally change precipitation to sleet, freezing rain, or snow.

In the Great Lakes, Ohio Valley, and Midwest, cold and snowy periods could alternate with milder conditions. Fast-moving clippers could bring snow squalls, gusty winds, and bursts of bitter cold. Frequent freezing and thawing could also quickly change road conditions.

The Southeast is expected to be cool, wet, and stormy. Farther north, the Northeast and New England could experience a mix of rain, sleet, freezing rain, and snow. Inland areas could receive several rounds of heavy wet snow, particularly in January and February.

The Farmers’ Almanac expects some of the heaviest precipitation along two main tracks: one extending from California through the southern U.S. and another along the Eastern Seaboard.

Make a Splash Safely: Water Safety and What Your Insurance Covers This Summer

August is peak season for pool parties, lake trips, and beach days. It's also, unfortunately, one of the most dangerous months of the year when it comes to water-related accidents. Every year in the United States, there are over 4,000 unintentional drowning deaths.

That's the sobering reality. The good news is that most drownings are preventable, and knowing both your safety options and your insurance coverage can make a real difference.

If You Have a Pool at Home

Backyard pools are one of summer's greatest joys, but they come with real responsibility. A pool is considered an "attractive nuisance" by the insurance industry, meaning your liability risk increases simply by having one.

Your homeowners policy does provide some protection. Personal liability coverage on a standard homeowners policy pays for medical bills and legal defense costs if a guest is injured in or around your pool. However, your insurer may deny a claim if you failed to meet safety requirements, such as installing a fence with a self-closing, self-latching gate.

Pool owners should consider increasing the liability portion of their homeowners policy to at least $300,000 to $500,000 or more if their assets warrant it. An umbrella liability policy can provide an additional layer of protection beyond your standard homeowners policy limits.

Water Safety Tips for Everyone

You don't need to own a pool to face water safety risks this summer. Whether you're at a local pool, a lake, or the beach, these tips apply to everyone:

Actively supervise children at all times. A child or weak swimmer can drown in the time it takes to reply to a text, check a fishing line, or apply sunscreen.
Never swim alone, regardless of age or skill level.
Skip the "floaties" and arm bands. They do not prevent drowning and can create a false sense of safety. A U.S. Coast Guard-approved life jacket is far more protective.
About 40% of drowning deaths among children ages 5 to 14 occur in natural water, and more than half of fatal drownings among people 15 and older occur in lakes, rivers, or oceans. Wear properly fitted life jackets in and around natural water, not just while boating.
Limit alcohol around the water. The CDC reports that alcohol use is involved in up to half of adolescent and adult deaths associated with water recreation.
Learn CPR. Performing CPR can save a life in the time it takes for paramedics to arrive.
Build a four-sided fence at least four feet high around your home pool with a self-closing, self-latching gate, and remove all toys from the pool when not in use.

8 Essential Tips for Keeping Your Pets Safe in Extreme Heat

There are many things you can do to ensure your pet’s safety year-round, but especially during extreme bouts of heat.

1. Bring pets indoors

In the summer months, the hours between 11 am and 2 pm are typically the hottest part of the day. During this time, bring pets inside so they too can take advantage of air conditioning and fans.

2. Provide access to clean water 24/7

Pets that can stay hydrated are in a better position to keep themselves cool and avoid the dangers of heatstroke. Always have a lot of clean drinking water available to pets in extreme heat—especially for animals that you are unable to bring indoors.

3. Adjust exercise routines

When it comes to daily walks and outdoor playtime with your pet during hot weather, be flexible. Try to schedule outdoor time for early mornings or late evenings when outside temperatures are cooler. Remember, hot pavement can burn tender paws. If the back of your hand can’t stand the heat of assault, then it’s too hot for your pet!

4. Create outdoor shade

For animals that can’t be brought indoors, it is critical to provide access to shade (in addition to fresh water at all times). Remember that the sun moves to various areas throughout the day, so you want to offer shade in different areas of your yard.

5. Keep pets groomed

Many breeds of cats and dogs grow thick fur coats during the winter to help insulate them against the cold. And while they shed some of this fur early in the summertime, some can remain. Regular brushing can help to remove any excess fur.

6. Leave pets at home

In hot weather the temperature inside a car on a 90-degree day can reach 108 degrees after just 10-minutes—even with a cracked window! Remember that leaving your pet in a vehicle is dangerous even if it’s only for a few minutes. During the summer months, your pets will thank you for leaving them at home.

7. Use pet cooling products

There are a variety of cooling products for pets that provide comfort on hot days, such as mats, coats, bandanas, and vests. There are also freezable dog chews, shallow paddling pools, and sprinklers can also be helpful, particularly if your dog enjoys playing in the water. At the very least, trying to put out a damp towel can help keep pets cool in hot weather.

8. Recognize the signs of heatstroke

According to the Federal Emergency Management Agency, there are specific signs that can indicate your pet may be experiencing a heat-related illness. By knowing what to look for, you can intervene sooner and get your pet the help he or she needs. Symptoms of heatstroke in pets include:

Excessive breathing or panting
Rapid heartbeat
Seizures
Purple tongue
Drooling
Vomiting
Excessive thirst
Weakness or collapse
Lack of alertness
Unconsciousness
Restlessness
Collapse

If you notice these signs, immediately move your pet to a cool place, offer water, and seek the care of a veterinarian.
